Whether your favorite sweet treat is down the block or across the county, the right ice cream cone can be worth the drive.

The middle of July is the ideal time to treat yourself with some ice cream. Sunday, July 16 is marked as National Ice Cream Day this year.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation into law that marked July as National Ice Cream Month with the third Sunday in July serving as National Ice Cream Day.

"Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States," Reagan said in the proclamation. "It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food."

Reagan also urged Americans to mark the occasion with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."
